The Hyperuricosuria (LUA) results are in!

The results are in and I am beyond thrilled!!!! We have seven LUA puppies out of eight. As if that wasn't good enough the two girls I liked the best are carrying two copies of the LUA gene. So the results are Pearl N/N, Poppy N/HU, Gunner N/HU, Dee Day HU/HU, Harbor N/HU, Sea Bee, N/HU, Star N/N and Glory N/HU.  I am sure some of you don't fully understand what those letter mean so let me explain.

Result: N/N - No copies of hyperuricosuria mutation; dog is normal.
Result: N/HU - 1 copy of hyperuricosuria mutation; dog is normal but is a carrier.
Result: HU/HU - 2 copies of hyperuricosuria mutation; dog is affected and susceptible to developing bladder/kidney stones.

Please keep in mind all Dalmatians are HU/HU except for the growing population of Dalmatians that originated from Dr. Schaible's backcross project! There are dedicated breeders throughout the US and now around the world who are working with the LUA gene. Our numbers are growing and through our dedication to improving a condition that exists in Dalmatians, fewer Dals are at risk of experiencing urinary blockage!

Sea Bee N/HU  He is going to be a beautiful LUA boy. If I were to keep a boy he would be the one!
Star N/N She is beautiful and like Pearl will only be offered to a show/breeding home.

Four Weeks

Here are some pictures of the puppies at 4 weeks. The DNA samples are now at U.C. Davis so I should have the results in 2 to 6 days. I thought I had a few pictures of each pup but unfortunately some of them were totally out of focus so I have no pictures of Star and Harbor. Sorry....

25 Days Old

Here are a few pictures taken on Thursday. They were 25 days old then. They continue to grow and thrive. The puppies can go to their new homes the weekend of July 19/20. There are many things to do before then. They will be swabbed for their DNA testing tomorrow! I will send the samples to U.C. Davis in California. The turn around time is usually about 1.5 weeks. That will be a very long week and a half for me. On July 15th the pups will have their BAER hearing test and their first shots and also their Veterinarian Health Certification. I know that many of you are anxious to choose your puppy but they are just starting to develop their personalities. Please try to be patient a bit longer. This is very hard for me too. I want to make sure these sweet babies go to the right homes and their personality is more important than their looks in making that happen. Many of you want to go see them and I will let that up to Dinah.

Star thinks toes taste pretty good. That cute liver boy sitting behind her is Sea Bee.
He has stolen my heart already! Fingers are crossed that he is homozygous LUA and hears in both ears!
I predict that Dee Day who is the black girl with the most spots on her face does not carry the LUA gene. She has intense pigmentation and will be a knock out when she grows up.
That is Glory playing with the green bone.

Three Weeks

I took some pictures on Sunday which was their three week birthday. Here are a few of the pictures. As you can see they are growing very quickly. Now they are starting to play and interact with each other. They are also getting sharp little teeth. While trying to decide which one was the cutest I came to realize it was which ever one I was holding at the time! They are starting to wonder away from their blanket to have their potty breaks. Enjoy the pictures.... more to come!

Two Black Boys

Here are the pictures of the two black spotted boys. It is hard to tell which puppy is the cutest.

I ordered the DNA test kits tonight so hopefully they will come in a couple of days. It is very hard to wait for results. My last two LUA litters were sired by Maks and since he is homozygous for the LUA gene I knew that they were all LUA.
